MARK WILLIAMS BLASTED a bid to ban his controversial break-off technique after cruising into the second round of the World Snooker Championship with a 10-4 victory over qualifier Sam Craigie.
The three-time former champion adopted the shot, with which he nudges the cue-ball into the back of the reds off the bottom cushion, at the Masters in January after growing frustrated at leaving frame-winning opportunities for opponent Shaun Murphy.

Snooker star Mark Williams hit out at attempts to ban his unusual break-off shot after easing into the second round of the World Championship with a 10-4 victory over qualifier Sam Craigie on Wednesday.
The three-time champion started to use the shot, which sees him nudge the cue ball into the back of the reds via the bottom cushion, during the Masters tournament in January after becoming annoyed at leaving opponent Shaun Murphy, a noted long-potter, with frame-winning opportunities.
Williams, however, said Wednesday that an email from the players association had been sent to leading snooker figures asking their opinion on whether that particular type of break-off shot, currently within the rules, should be prohibited.

Good morning – Warren Murray making sure that knowing the news is the least of your problems right now.
Joe Biden is hosting more than 40 world leaders virtually today and tomorrow to discuss ways of fulfilling the 2015 Paris climate agreement, and to encourage leading economies to bring forward plans for cutting greenhouse gas emissions in the next decade. Such plans will be crucial to limiting global heating to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, in line with scientific advice. Boris Johnson will address the White House climate summit in a plea to world leaders to make Cop26 in Glasgow later this year a success.
MARK WILLIAMS set up a sensational second round match-up with John Higgins at this year’s World Snooker Championship after defeating Sam Craigie 10-4 on Wednesday evening.
The first round match was finely poised going into the evening session with Williams leading the Crucible debutant 5-4.
It looked like it might need all 19 frames to decide the winner, but the Welshman sped into a 9-4 lead by the mid-session interval before finishing the job with a break of 94 the highest of the match in the 14th frame.
“Tonight I played really well, to be honest,” Williams said after winning five frames in a row.
