MU Researcher Lands Large Grant To Explore Causes Of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Erika Boerman’s passion for her work is palpable. The excitement grows in her eyes as she points to an image on her computer screen of a blood vessel made up of vibrant blues, greens and reds. She talks about her work with a $350,000 confocal microscope as her zen. “I love talking about blood vessels to people because there is so much more going on that people don’t realize,” Boerman said in her narrow lab at the end of a quiet hallway in the MU Medical Sciences Building. Boerman, an MU assistant professor of medical pharmacology and physiology, has received a $1.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study the role of perivascular nerves in inflammatory bowel disease. Boerman plans to study the blood flow in mice and determine why inflammatory bowel disease impairs the blood vessels and nerves around them.

Remote corner of Box Elder County produces state-record fish

Box Elder County, where dry desert mountain ranges and the Great Salt Lake dominate much of the landscape, isn’t often thought of as a place to catch state record-caliber fish. However, the mountainous northwest corner of the state happens to be the only area in Utah where a certain subspecies of cutthroat trout can be found, making it the go-to location for anyone looking for Yellowstone cutthroat in the state. The Yellowstone cutthroat is native to the Snake River drainage, a watershed whose southern boundary encompasses the Raft River Mountains of Box Elder County. The fish can be found in a few streams draining off the north slope of this range, which reaches nearly 10,000 feet in elevation and contains the highest point in the county.

A look at the 10 Utah fishing records broken in 2020

SALT LAKE CITY This year may have been an overall dismal year for most things, but it was a good year for fishing. In fact, 2020 was a banner year for a group of anglers who set new Utah fishing records. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources recognized nine anglers this month who set a total of 10 new fishing records over the course of the past 12 months. The state s record book dates back to the early 1900s and contains 37 catch-and-release records, 33 catch-and-keep records, and 21 spearfishing records. Craig Walker, aquatics assistant chief for DWR, called 2020 somewhat of a record year based on how many records were broken.
