Coast Guard seizes cargo vessel that hit launch killing 34 in Shitalakkhya

They include the vessel’s Master Wahiduzzaman, 55, and sailor Mojnu Molla, 38. The red vessel, SKL-3, was painted white to conceal its identity but the Coastguards tracked it, said Narayanganj Deputy Commissioner Mustain Billah. Witnesses and survivors said the launch, Sabit Al Asad, packed beyond capacity, sank on Apr 4 after being hit by SKL-3. The captain of the vessel ignored warnings three times, said ‘Anis’, a security guard at the Third Shitalakkhya Bridge project.

Earlier, the rescuers retrieved 29 bodies from the sunken launch on the Shitalakkhya river. Packed beyond its capacity, the launch Sabit Al Asad from Munshiganj capsized near Madanganj Ghat on Sunday afternoon after being hit by a cargo vessel, SKL-3. Some passengers were able to swim back ashore, while most of them were missing. Later, most of the bodies were retrieved from the launch after it was recovered.

Bangladesh opens investigation into deadly launch capsize

Abdus Sattar Sheikh, joint secretary to the ministry, is convener of the committee while Md Rafiqul Islam, a director of BIWTA, is member secretary. The others in the committee are Captain Jashimuddin Sarker, chief nautical surveyor at the Department of Shipping, the chief engineer of BIWTC, a representative of the deputy commissioner, a representative of the Fire Service and Civil Defence and another from the naval police.

Kabir Hossain, in charge of Muktarpur River Police Station, said they despatched a team but it could not move towards the site due to a storm. Some of the rescued passengers were brought to Munshiganj General Hospital for treatment.
