The Sanford Backpack Program Inspires Maine
When it comes to struggles with food insecurities, Maine children need our help more than ever. According to SanfordStrong.org, one out of every four children in the state of Maine lacks access to the food they need on a daily basis.
When in school most of these children are able to qualify for Maine supplemental food benefits, either for free or at a reduced amount however, once the end of the week rolls around, the weekend can be sparse for many children when it comes to getting the food they need.
This is where the Sanford Backpack Program steps in. The Sanford Backpack Program makes sure that these at need children leave school with a backpack full of meals that are easy to prepare and are also nutritious.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honors Sanford and Lisbon students with a $2,500 scholarship, silver medallion and invitation to virtual celebration for their work addressing the challenges of a changing world

NEWARK, N.J., Feb. 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Grace Davie, 16, of Sanford and Miranda Torrey, 12, of Lisbon today were named Maine s top youth volunteers of 2021 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, America s largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer service.
As State Honorees, Grace and Miranda will each receive a $2,500 scholarship, a silver medallion and an invitation to the program s virtual national recognition celebration in April, where 10 of the 102 State Honorees will be named America s top youth volunteers of the year. Those 10 National Honorees will earn an additional $5,000 scholarship, a gold medallion

SANFORD, Maine Families in Sanford struggling with food insecurity were received a box of Christmas joy Thursday.
Through the Sanford Backpack Program, which helps food-insecure families get the essentials, Junior Grace Davie came up with a Christmas themed initiative. 30 volunteers, 20 students, and over 800 participants helped Davie make it happen over the past month.
Participants were given a fully wrapped box at the beginning of November, along with a list of suggested items to fill it with. Items ranging from holiday cookie mix to deodorant and shampoo.
