New agreement between Victorville, San Bernardino County Fire could save some more lives

An agreement city officials say will reduce response times for emergencies, such as car crashes and strokes, has been approved by the Victorville City Council.
The City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously in favor of the automatic aid agreement between the Victorville Fire and San Bernardino County Fire departments.
As part of the agreement, fire engines from both departments can be dispatched to a call based on proximity, regardless of whether an emergency occurs within city or county boundaries.
Previously, the city and county operated under a mutual aid agreement, which required prior authorization for assistance and a potentially longer wait time for someone in need of emergency services.
Two unrelated home fires lit up the Morongo Basin last night.
First, a Landers home that appeared to be inhabited by squatters caught fire shortly before midnight. Fire crews responded to a structure fire in the 56200 block of Lilac Avenue to find heavy smoke and flames from a single-story home, an RV, and multiple cars that were also on fire. The fire was knocked down in approximately 20 minutes and fire crews did not find anyone in the home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Paul Russ, former mayor of Hesperia, dies after testing positive for COVID-19

Paul Russ, the former mayor of Hesperia, who most recently ran for a seat on the Hesperia Unified School District Board of Directors in November, has died at the age of 61, his family confirmed with the Daily Press.
Russ died Thursday, according to his daughter, Stephanie Russ, who said her father tested positive for COVID-19 on Jan. 8. He died at Victor Valley Global Medical Center shortly before 3 p.m.
“(H)e went back and forth several times,” Stephanie Russ said via text message Thursday evening. “The 18th (of January) was when he was admitted. Per the nurse he died of Covid pneumonia.”
7-year-old boy dies in a house fire in Joshua Tree; 8-year-old in critical condition

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Bombs and Arson Division is investigating a fire that took the life of a seven-year-old boy Thursday afternoon in Joshua Tree.
The fire was reported on Thursday at 11:56 a.m. on the 62200 block of Crestview Drive. Fire crews reported arrived heavy smoke and fire showing from multiple sides of the single-story home when they first arrived on scene.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department reported that when crews arrived, two people were able to safely evacuate the home but two juveniles, ages 7 and 8, were still inside.
