HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif.
Crews have hauled away the rotting carcass of a dead fin whale that washed ashore and prompted the closure of a Southern California beach.
A section of Bolsa Chica State Beach was shut down Friday after the Orange County Health Care Agency determined that the decomposing remains posed a health hazard.
Over the weekend, it was cut apart and scooped up by heavy loaders and carried off to the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, the Orange County Register reported Monday.
During the few days it was stuck on the sand, the stinking carcass drew a steady stream of onlookers and people taking selfies with the gigantic creature, the newspaper said. The fin whale is second largest mammal in the world behind the blue whale.

In 2021, Sublime is a mainstay of rock music, if not one of the most popular California bands of all time. Their hits are so synonymous with Southern California that their songs have been used at least once in film to communicate that a character is in fact a huge stoner.
That pop culture ubiquity belies the fact that they never achieved mainstream success with their original lineup.
Tragically, Sublime lead singer and guitarist Bradley Nowell was found dead at age 28 from a heroin overdose in the Oceanview Motel in Outer Sunset, San Francisco. Two months later, the band s self-titled album – featuring the iconic singles “Santeria,” “Wrong Way” and, of course, “What I Got” – was released to immediate success. The album would go platinum six times and continues to appear on “Best Album of All Time” lists to this day. Sublime dissolved after the death of their frontman, and the majority of fans never had a chance to watch them play live.
Carcass of Dead Whale Hauled Away From Beach in Orange County Authorities believe the whale is one of two that were struck by an Australian navy ship two weeks ago and then towed out to sea from San Diego. One of them washed ashore at Bolsa Chica State Beach.

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Switchfoot has done live streams at Petco Park, on a hot air balloon, on the San Diego Bay on a Hornblower Boat and now they are doing one on the USS Midway.
Guitarist Drew Shirley joined Good Morning San Diego to discuss the concert. Shirley said his dad is a veteran and the stream honoring our military is very meaningful to him.
The concert is a “way to kick off Memorial Day weekend than a show honoring the troops from the deck of one of the most historic ships in our nation’s history,” according to band manager Jess Ohlsen.
