SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Jury selection is scheduled to begin next week in the death penalty trial of a man accused of gunning down a San Diego police officer nearly five years ago.
Jesse Michael Gomez, 60, is charged with murder and attempted murder, with a special circumstance allegation of murder of a police officer, for allegedly shooting Officer Jonathan J.D. De Guzman, 43, and fellow gang-unit Officer Wade Irwin in the Southcrest neighborhood on the night of July 28, 2016.
CHULA VISTA
Larry Millete is a “person of interest” in the January disappearance of his wife and mother of his three children, Maya “May” Millete, the Chula Vista Police Department said Thursday.
Larry Millete is the last person known to have seen his wife on Jan. 7 in the eastern Chula Vista house where the family lives. The couple reportedly had an argument before Maya Millete stopped responding to the family text chain and missed their oldest child’s 11th birthday and a planned family trip to Big Bear.
But even while seizing his guns and searching his home, police had not identified Larry Millete as a person of interest in the case until Thursday. CBS News8 first reported Wednesday that a deputy city attorney had used that phrase when referring to Millete during a Superior Court hearing about whether to make records related to the gun violence restraining order public.
VALLEY CENTER (KUSI) – Deputies broke up an illegal marijuana cultivation and processing operation in Valley Center Thursday.
The personnel, including a SWAT team, served a warrant at the cannabis-growing site in the 12000 block of Sierra Rojo Road about 7 a.m., according to sheriff’s officials.
During the raid, deputies seized 111 cannabis plants, $9,100 in currency, three ounces of cocaine, some chopped psilocybin mushrooms and ammunition, Sgt. Kamon Harris said. They also discovered two labs used for extracting tetrahydrocannabinol, the intoxicating substance in marijuana.
“THC-extraction labs are highly explosive (and) unpredictable, and pose a great danger to the general public,” Harris said.

CHULA VISTA (KUSI) – Authorities Thursday officially confirmed that the husband of a Chula Vista woman who vanished more than six months ago is a “person of interest” in her disappearance.
Larry Millete, who reported his wife, May, missing Jan. 10, was served with a gun violence restraining order four months later, and detectives have executed three search warrants at the couple’s home near Mount San Miguel Park.
While finally acknowledging their particular investigative focus on the spouse of the suspiciously absent mother of three young children, police declined to provide further details about their reasons for it.
“Due to the sensitivity of the case and to protect the integrity of the investigation, we will not be providing additional information at this time,” CVPD Lt. Dan Peak said Thursday afternoon.
