Sanibel Sea School hosts Calusa Week at summer camp | News, Sports, Jobs - SANIBEL-CAPTIVA - Island Reporter, Islander and Current

Sanibel Sea School hosts Calusa Week at summer camp By SANIBEL SEA SCHOOL - | Jul 28, 2021 SANIBEL SEA SCHOOL Sanibel Sea School campers built a raft out of all natural materials for Calusa Week. From July 19-23, the Sanibel Sea School held Calusa Week at its flagship campus on the east end of Sanibel. Campers celebrated the Calusa tribe by honing their waterfolk skills, building their own rafts and shelters, weaving palm fronds, and even making tools out of natural materials. The Calusa lived in Southwest Florida until the mid-18th century and used the ocean as a primary resource. Evidence suggests that they did not practice agriculture but instead lived off of the ocean and made their living sailing, fishing and crafting tools out of mollusk shells.

On the Water: Anglers take advantage of good weather | News, Sports, Jobs

On the Water: Anglers take advantage of good weather By Capt. Bill Russell - | Jun 9, 2021 Ray Murphy and crew with a good haul of red snapper, grouper and other mixed fish. They were fishing west of Captiva Pass with Capt. Sean McQuade. PHOTO PROVIDED With gag grouper and red snapper season open, anglers took advantage of good weather. It’s a long run west into Gulf waters to get to depths that red snapper call home, but conditions over the week allowed anglers to box their limits of snapper. Red snapper, red grouper, a few big gag grouper, plus mangrove and vermilion snapper were brought up from depths ranging from 110 to 150 feet. You can visit www.myfwc.com for all state and federal grouper and snapper regulations.
