The Sanibel School’s fourth-grade classes recently visited the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s Pick Preserve located across the street for a Habitat Study Field Trip. Led by SCCF Educator Richard Finkel, students in Julie Wappes’ and Daryl Peters’ classes observed and recorded the defining plant life within the interior of Sanibel. Finkel reported: “Discovering the diversity of life found within the ecosystem clearly revealed the importance of freshwater habitats for the students. Students enjoyed the outdoor classroom and writing about their observations and excitement into descriptive narratives in the Pick Preserve’s gazebo.”

The Sanibel Fire and Rescue District’s commission approved a handful of resolutions during its recent meeting, as well as heard updates on CARES Act funding and COVID-19 vaccination distribution.
On Dec. 9, the commissioners voted unanimously 3-0 to allow the purchase of an MSA gas detector and Galaxy automated calibration station and gas cylinders, along with other associated parts, at a cost of about $6,750. The equipment will be stored and utilized by Station 172 on Sanibel-Captiva Road.
Prior to the vote, Division Chief of Training Tim Barrett explained that the equipment picks up different kinds of gases, such as methane, to alert the crew to any dangerous ones at a scene.

Once again, teachers at The Sanibel School are able to take their students on walking field trips and take advantage of Sanibel’s environment as an outdoor classroom, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation reported. Located directly across the street from the school, SCCF’s Pick Preserve is an ideal setting for incorporating environmental education into curriculum, which has been a 20-year collaboration with the SCCF.
SCCF Environmental Educator Richard Finkel recently met Kelly Johnson’s middle school STEM class to explore the ecology of Sanibel’s freshwater wetlands. Students observed and recorded the aquatic habitat’s small life forms. They were excited to get out of the classroom and discover small fish, tadpoles, damselfly and dragonfly nymphs, fishing spiders, water beetles, water striders, and freshwater snails within their water samples.
