EDITORIAL: With another drought, county facing new costs and fire risks
Santa Cruz Sentinel (CA)
Not just the COVID-19 pandemic, which shows many signs of easing in
Santa Cruz County and most of
California.
Earthquakes. Prolonged drought. Fires.
Actually, these last three probably aren t heralds of the end of the world, but have become part of our normal existence.
On earthquakes, a 4.0-magnitude shaker followed quickly by a 3.3-magnitude quake, rattled the
Los Angeles area last week. Then Wednesday, a 3.7-magnitude quake shook western
Fresno County.

Virtual events bring the tasting room to the living room
Virtual wine events bring winemaker input to at-home tastings.
One of the highlights of living in California is our easy access to world-class wine destinations. A weekend spent touring one of our local wine regions sat firmly at the top of my list of favorite ways to celebrate big birthdays and anniversaries, enjoy reunions with friends or entertain out-of-town guests.
Many of the wineries found on these adventures were small, family-owned businesses whose bottles I never would have enjoyed had it not been for a chance encounter in their tasting room.

Since the 1920s, Hidden Villa in Los Altos Hills has been a hub for wildlife education and exposure to the natural world, inviting schools, families and other members of the public to explore its farm, garden and trails.
When the pandemic hit, the Hidden Villa staff had to find ways to connect visitors with nature while keeping them safe.
In June, Hidden Villa switched to a reservations-based system, with the hope that a phased approach would bring a return to normalcy. While other parks may face the complications of visitor limitations, the online reservation system employed by Hidden Villa aims to ensure social distancing to keep staff and visitors safe, along with the capability of doing contact tracing, if necessary.
