CHANDLER, AZ â An online Chandler Unified School District teacher has gone above and beyond to keep her students engaged despite the challenges that come with virtual learning.
Heather Dearing is teaching 26 fourth-grade students at Chandler Online Academy. I m just a very animated person, I m very sarcastic with my students. I m very over the top. I like to get them in and out of their seats quite a bit, moving around. We have brain breaks throughout the day when we have no screen for ten minutes in between certain things, said Dearing.
Fourteen years ago, Lara DeRoule needed a break.
She had been a Pre-K-2 teacher for 15 years, both in Mesa Public Schools and a small private school, but tired of the bureaucracy of a public school system and decided to become a dental hygienist.
âIt just was a bunch of testing at that time where I felt like we werenât really using what we found out,â the Gilbert woman said.
Now, DeRoule is back in school â her own.
Two years ago, she started Dynamic Micro School, riding on a wave of a growing interest in small-group schools that are neither charters nor public and that aim for home-schooled children from Pre-K level to sixth grade.

CHANDLER, AZ â In a year most of us are hoping to forget, Sixth Grade Teacher Amanda Mumme is making this school year one to remember.
She transformed the avatars her students made for a comic book project into a holiday greeting card. I picked the winter wonderland and decided I want to do something nice for the kids because I don t get to see them, said Mumme. Mrs. Mumme, as her students call her, volunteered to teach for Chandler Online Academy this year after more than a dozen years in the classroom.
