No intention of demolishing unique Shiprow wall after more than 100 objections are lodged

Updated: 01/05/2021, 1:11 pm © Darrell Benns / DCT Media An Aberdeen hotelier has vowed not to demolish a wall with ties to the city’s medieval past. Around 130 people have objected to demolition plans for the preserved wall around 62 and 64 Shiprow, previously approved by the council. Hotel boss Mary Martin, who bore the brunt of the “whipped up” outrage, has now said they have “no intention” of knocking down the unique granite frontage. A report compiled in 2010 noted the survival of fragments of a former tenement between 60 and 62 Shiprow, viewed to be of “cultural significance” as it likely incorporated Middle Ages architecture within it.

Plans to promote walking and cut pollution on Aberdeen s Wellington Road

© PRESS AND JOURNAL Wellington Road pictured in 2018 Plans to cut pollution on an Aberdeen road include adding cycle paths and creating new crossings to encourage more walking. Research by Friends of the Earth Scotland showed that the air in the area contained significantly high levels of particulate matter – microscopic airborne pollutants that can cause harm to the body when inhaled. The levels decreased last year due to lower traffic levels during the pandemic, and plans are now being put in place to achieve a permanent solution. Aberdeen City Council is launching a public consultation to garner people’s opinions on how best to tackle the problem.
