Aberdeen City Council’s roadworks programme has been taken off an improvement plan two years after it was branded “poor”. The Scottish Roadworks Commissioner has published an annual report on the local authority’s performance, which will go before the Operational Delivery Committee next week. In 2018, the council was placed on an action plan along with several other local authorities after its performance was found to be “poor and in need of improvement”. Areas for improvement included the number of works requiring early or late starts, and the amount of projects which needed to be extended.

North-east health chiefs have revealed hospital services have been stretched in the city with a double whammy of Covid-19 cases and patients admitted with injuries caused by icy conditions. Staff at NHS Grampian have been told that the regular pressures from the winter have been “compounded” by the number of patients with coronavirus leading to a reduction in the number of available beds at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. And rising numbers of people have also been turning up at the Accident and Emergency Department  – with more than 500 patients injured as a result of slips and falls between December 21 and January 4.

Police officers were called to the city’s Jasmine Terrance area just before 8am yesterday morning to reports that windows had been targeted. Shona Forbes-Black, who lives on the street, described the “unnerving” moment the vandalism took place. She said: “I heard a very loud smash at around 7:45am when I was on the phone to my dad. “I looked out to make sure my car window hadn’t been smashed because it sits right outside my window. I’ve also got a bottle bin outside and I thought it was peculiar that someone would be making such a noise with one bottle at that time of the morning.

Call for action over unsafe Aberdeen pavements

An Aberdeen councillor has called for urgent action to address the “serious” state of the pavements on one of Aberdeen’s key routes. Martin Greig, who represents Hazlehead, Queen’s Cross and Countesswells, said the condition of the footways on Anderson Drive pose a danger to the public. The Liberal Democrat councillor has had reports of uneven paths and flooding – and says some parts of the pavement are even starting to give way. Anderson Drive was formerly controlled by the Scottish Government body Transport Scotland as it used to be part of the A90 trunk road.
