COVID-19 Dominated Headlines During Year

By Editor | December 30, 2020 By Mark Evans mevans@stegenherald.com Blindsiding America and the world, the novel coronavirus called COVID-19 became a focus of local attention at the beginning of March. Sandra Bell, executive director of the Ste. Genevieve County Health Department, began updating the County Commission twice a week on the situation and addressed the Ste. Genevieve Board of Aldermen meetings regularly. She first met with them on March 2 and reported that Missouri had just reported its first case. There were 164 cases nationally, although that figure had doubled in one day. Bell noted that figures “change almost hourly.” COVID-19 test kits were ordered and the battle against the virus began.

Mueller Assumes Hot Seat

By MARK EVANS mevans@stegenherald.com Jennifer Mueller is confident she is up to the huge challenge of taking over the Ste. Genevieve County Health Department. Like Chester W Nimitz, who took over command of the U.S. Pacific Fleet after Pearl Harbor, Mueller is taking over the health department at a trying time, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and just as the logistics of distributing vaccines for the caronavirus are being worked out. In addition, since long-time administrator Sandra Bell left in early July, the department has fallen behind in billing and other paperwork critical to maintaining incoming revenue.

Wood Agrees To Submit Resignation

By Editor | December 23, 2020 By MARK EVANS mevans@stegenherald.com Since Jeanette Wood agreed to take on the duties of Ste. Genevieve County Health Department administrator the first week in September, a cloud had hung over her head. That cloud, the County Commission’a concern that she could not legally hold the position after having just served on the county health board, finally burst last week. Wood agreed to resign during last Thursday’s County Commission meeting after Presiding Commissioner Garry Nelson and Prosecuting Attorney Wayne Williams discussed the situation with her. “The problem is we’re breaking the law and we know it,” Nelson told Wood. “I took an oath to support  the Missouri Constitution and the laws that go with it. That man (Williams) did the same thing. We have nothing against Jeanette Wood. You’ve been a community pillar for 40 years, we’ve been friends for 20 years. If it was Randy Bahr sitting here, it would be the same thing.”
