Ex-police chief indicted on 88 counts in evidence theft case

WHITEVILLE, N.C. (AP) A former North Carolina police chief who resigned last month amid an investigation into missing evidence has been indicted on 88 felony counts, authorities announced Friday.
William Anthony Spivey was indicted by a Columbus County grand jury on Wednesday on charges including embezzlement, destruction of evidence, obstruction of justice, opium trafficking and illegally obtaining controlled substances, according to District Attorney Jon David.
David said the indictment shows that several firearms were stolen by Spivey from the evidence locker at the Chadbourn Police Department.
David said the State Bureau of Investigation has recovered some of the stolen firearms, adding that several of them were sold by Spivey to friends, family members and acquaintances.

COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) - Former Chadbourn Police Chief Anthony Spivey was arrested Monday, April 19, around 3:45 p.m. in Fair Bluff by special agents with the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).
Sheriff Jody Greene confirmed the arrest to WECT Monday night.
Spivey, 35, was charged by the SBI with the following:
31 felony counts alter, steal, or destroy evidence
31 felony counts embezzlement by public official
4 felony counts trafficking opiates by possession
4 felony counts trafficking opiates/opioids by transportation

Spivey, 35, was charged by the SBI with the following:

CHADBOURN, N.C. (WECT) - Chadbourn Police Chief Anthony Spivey, who was suspended last month after he allegedly was unable to produce evidence in multiple cases, has resigned, according to Chadbourn Mayor Phillip Britt.
“Chief Anthony Spivey turned in his resignation to the Town Of Chadbourn effective 4/6/2021,” Britt told WECT. “I would also like to say that the Town Of Chadbourn would like to wish him well in the future and we appreciate his service to the town.”

CHADBOURN, N.C. (WECT) - District Attorney Jon David recommended that the Town of Chadbourn suspend Police Chief Anthony Spivey earlier this month after Spivey was unable to produce evidence connected to multiple cases.
In a letter sent to Interim Town Manager Jerome Chestnut on March 4, David said that the town’s police department had “neglected to send any narcotics for chemical analysis to the State Crime Lab for a substantial period of time.”
