Saddleworth Parish Council is taking forward plans to give Uppermill-born physicist Albert Wood OBE a blue plaque. The plaque will mark Mr Wood s incredible achievements in helping to develop sonar – and thus saving thousands - if not millions - of lives during the second world war. Local resident Roy Crozier brought the proposal to the Council, having read about the physicist in the newsletter of the Saddleworth Historical Society. The Council is now investigating the exact location of his place of birth on Pickhill in Uppermill, and looking at options for where to locate a blue plaque and more information on the physicist.

After the area was hit by Storm Christoph, the Lib-Dems insist that flooding issues are a pressing concern for Saddleworth residents. The group requested answers on a range of issues and their impact on planning decisions. They asked the Borough Council to provide proof that their approach to cleaning drains and gullies works, given the conditions faced in Saddleworth.

A former Mayoress of Oldham whose radiant smile lit up every corner of the borough, has died. Kathleen Hudson and her husband Councillor John Hudson have dedicated their lives to the service of the community. Last year, as part of their caring nature they shared their diamond wedding anniversary with a hundred guests. Kathleen quipped  on social media: “It  was a magical night with so many helping us celebrate. “Thanks to our two wonderful daughters for sharing it with us and the Civic Hall staff who helped we wanted to prove we are still here.” Cllr Hudson, who was 81 years old on Christmas Eve, is Oldham council’s Saddleworth South member, and has received an OBE from the Queen for his public, political and charitable services spread over 40 years.

Parish Council signs up to Pledge to Peace Date published: 11 January 2021 Saddleworth Parish Council Chairman, Councillor Barbara Beeley Saddleworth Parish Council have shown their support for the area’s thriving peace movement, by signing the Pledge to Peace. The Pledge, which is administered by the Percorsi Peace Association in Italy, has been signed by organisations and individuals worldwide, reflecting their commitment to peace. It pledges the Council to commit to working with other organisations across the area, and the world, to ensure that it stands up for peace. Parish Council Chairman, Councillor Barbara Beeley, said: “We have unfortunately seen recently how easy it is for tensions to break, and for what seemed unthinkable to happen.
