The condition of Covid patients at some government hospitals was not being monitored closely and some doctors, including seniors, were not focussing on their treatment, a panel of doctors set up by the government has said in a report.
The team visited hospitals to monitor whether the protocols for the treatment of Covid-19 were being adhered to.
The team came to know that at some hospitals there was no proper system of bedside monitoring of Covid patients, including their oxygen saturation levels.
At a few others, doctors were not attentive enough to find out whether some critical patients required to be “stepped up” for further intensive care or “stepped down” from the existing care system.
The state health department has allowed private hospitals and nursing homes to increase their bed strength by up to 40 per cent to cope with the rising number of Covid patients in need of admission.
Private healthcare providers will not have to deposit any fees for extra beds, the department said in a circular.
“In the present scenario of resurgence of Covid-19 infections it has become necessary to increase the bed strength of all private nursing homes and hospitals to combat the present rising trend of Covid-19 positive cases,” Ajay Chakraborty, the state s director of health services, said in the notification.

The third phase of the clinical trial of Russian Covid vaccine candidate Sputnik V is likely to begin at the state-run College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital (CMSDH) in the second week of January. The facility in Kamarhati in North 24 Parganas district is the second hospital after Peerless Hospital in Kolkata where the Russian vaccine candidate trial will be conducted.
Sources in CMSDH said a technical advisory committee had already approved the third phase of the trial. “Once the ethics committee gives a green signal, the trial will start. The next meeting of the ethics committee is on January 9,” a senior doctor told
