Specialty chemicals firm Nouryon announced Tuesday that it has commenced the engineering phase for a new expandable microspheres plant in Green Bay, WI and said work on the site is expected to begin later this year.
Expandable microspheres are used to reduce the weight, cost, and environmental impacts of a variety of end products. Nouryon sells expandable thermoplastic microspheres under the brand Expancel. The company said the new facility will help it to meet an uptick in demand and complement its existing expandable microspheres operations in China, Brazil, and Sweden.
The Green Bay facility currently has assets for the final step of the Expancel production process. Once the expansion is completed, the plant will be capable of carrying out all manufacturing steps for the product.

TOKYO, May 11 (Xinhua) An explosion took place at a chemical factory in northeastern Japan on Tuesday, injuring four people, local media reported.
According to local authorities, no toxic gases have been detected.
The blast occurred at around 7:45 a.m. local time at Sakai Chemical Industry Co. s Yumoto Factory in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, the authorities said.
Three of the injured people suffered burns, among whom one was seriously hurt, and the remaining had a minor injury, according to local authorities.
According to Sakai Chemical, the factory manufactures materials including zinc oxide and zinc powder that are used to make cosmetics and paints.

Fukushima – An explosion rocked a chemical factory in Fukushima Prefecture on Tuesday, injuring four people, but no toxic gases have been detected, local authorities said.
The blast at Sakai Chemical Industry Co.’s Yumoto Factory in the city of Iwaki occurred at about 7:45 a.m., the authorities said, adding one of the four is seriously hurt.
