Coffee gets us going. Our national dependence upon this dark brew is famous and celebrated in song and film (and meme, like the poster with a holographic Princess Leia, cup in hand, declaring, “Help me, caffeine you’re my only hope!”).
But the stimulating qualities of the coffee bean are not what gets Max Pruna’s brain cells firing. It’s coffee’s softer side that is the inspiration and foundation for his La Mulita Coffee Bar and Roastery on Sagamore Road in Rye.

As Memorial Day fast approaches, I became quite curious as to its origins so I did a little research that I thought interesting enough to share.
As many of my generation know, Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day. It originated immediately following the Civil War but actually did not become an official U.S. holiday until 1971.

Immediately post-Civil War, Americans began going to cemeteries and decorating graves with flowers. Sadly, the United States had to establish national cemeteries because the Civil War took the lives of 750,000 Americans or 2 percent of the national population at that time. In 1868, General John Logan, leader of an organization for northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance on May 30, choosing precisely that date because it was not the anniversary of any battle in the war.
FIREFIGHTERS IN ACTION AT TWO STRUCTURE FIRES DURING FRIGID NIGHT By Todd Marino
Area firefighters had a busy night battling structure fires.
The action included a house fire in Sagamore reported at about 10:30 PM. Rural Valley firefighters report flames were coming from the rear of the single-family home along Sagamore Road when they arrived. Firefighters from Dayton, Kittanning, Elderton, Plumville, Marion Center, and Perry Township – from Jefferson County – were dispatched to help battle the flames. Electric company workers were summoned to cut the power to a utility line that was downed. Most of the fire was extinguished from the outside, and interior crews then went inside and extinguished hot spots in the walls and attic.
