Roughriders sign top draft pick Nelson Lokombo

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed their first pick in the 2021 CFL draft. The Roughriders announced Friday they had signed University of Saskatchewan Huskies defensive back Nelson Lokombo, whom the Roughriders selected in the first round (second overall) of the May 4 draft. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Lokombo won the Presidents’ Trophy as the most outstanding defensive player in Canadian university football in 2019. He had 39 tackles, six tackles for losses, three sacks, five interceptions (two of which he returned for touchdowns), four pass breakups and one forced fumble that sreason. He also was named Canada West’s most outstanding defensive player, a Canada West all-star and a U Sports first-team all-Canadian that season.

Three members of U of R Rams invited to East-West Bowl By Mitchell Blair May 12, 2021 | 2:28 PM They won’t get a chance to play, but three members of the University of Regina Rams have been chosen for Team West at the 2021 East-West Bowl which showcases prospects for the 2022 CFL draft. The three are receiver Bennett Stusek, defensive back Jaxon Ford and linebacker Ryder Varga. In two seasons with the club, Stusek, who went to high school at Regina’s Campbell Collegiate, has caught 54 passes for 918 yards and two touchdowns. Ford, who was a teammate of Stusek’s at Campbell, is a key member of the secondary. In his two years with the “Horns”, Ford has accumulated 62 total tackles including 4.5 tackles for loss, three interceptions, and seven pass deflections for the Rams.

TSN CFL insider Farhan Lalji reports that Nelson Lokombo and 5th-round pick Logan Bandy will work out with the Washington Football Team on Thursday. #Riders draft picks Nelson Lokombo & Logan Bandy are headed to DC to work out for #WFT tomorrow, ahead of the team’s mini-camp that begins on Friday. They could still earn mini-camp invites. Teams are only allowed to bring in max 5 undrafted/signed players to mini camps this year The Riders chose Lokombo 2nd overall in last week’s draft. His play with the Saskatchewan Huskies earned him the 2019 President’s Trophy as the top defensive player in USports football.
