Nine university football players with ties to Saskatchewan have been named to the Team West roster for the 2021 U Sports East-West Bowl.
Unfortunately for the players, the game won’t be played due to COVID-19. The 2020 all-star contest also was cancelled due to the pandemic.
The annual game highlights players who are eligible for the following year’s CFL draft.
Five members of the Saskatchewan Huskies were selected for Team West: Defensive back Charlie Ringland (who hails from Winnipeg), defensive lineman Nathan Cherry (Saskatoon), kicker David Solie (Saskatoon), offensive lineman Noah Zerr (Langenburg) and running back Adam Machart (Saskatoon).
SASKATOON A University of Saskatchewan Huskies player is the first defensive back to be selected with a top two pick in the CFL Draft since 2008. “Extremely excited when they called my name, I don t even know how to describe the emotions I felt, but I m beyond excited to be a part of it,” said Nelson Lokombo, who the Saskatchewan Roughriders nabbed with the second overall pick. “I m hoping to come in and learn the system and do whatever I can to help the team. Whether it be getting a starting role or helping out on special teams, I think that I can make an impact any way.”
The Ticats also announced they ve signed Burt to a three-year deal.
Burt appeared in 36 career games at Boston College, registering 23 catches for 307 yards and two touchdowns. After being bypassed in the 2020 NFL draft, Burt signed as a free agent with the New England Patriots, spending the entire season on the practice roster before becoming a free agent this off-season.
Burt’s situation is very similar to that of linebacker Alex Singleton. A native Californian who played collegiately at Montana State, Singleton spent time in 2015 with Seattle, New England and Minnesota before being deemed eligible for the ‘16 CFL draft because his mother was Canadian.
