Stonehaven rail crash: Rail authorities have gaps in preparing for severe weather - new report

Updated: 21/04/2021, 7:03 pm © PRESS AND JOURNAL There are gaps in how rail authorities prepare for severe weather, a new report following the Stonehaven rail crash has said. Train driver Brett McCullough, conductor Donald Dinnie and passenger Christopher Stuchbury died in the tragedy at Carmont last August. © Supplied by Graphic made up from Brett McCullough, Donald Dinnie and Christopher Stuchbury The tragedy happened on a morning of heavy rain, which washed materials from a lineside drain onto the track. A new report looking to improve the management of ‘weather-related events’ on the railway has been published by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB).

Brett McCullough: Family pay tribute to amazing father and husband

The family believe it should have explained that line speed is the speed drivers are expected to go at – and that they would be failing in their job if they did not go at line speed. That failure to explain, they say, led to some people wrongly believing Brett was driving too fast, even though he was driving below the 75mph speed limit on that part of the track. It is understood RAIB has agreed to consult the family before any future report is published to avoid a repeat. Stephanie said: “I’m pleased the Evening Express is writing this piece to explain things for people who don’t know the railway.”
