World Rugby to trial laws aimed at improving player welfare

World Rugby to trial laws aimed at improving player welfare By STEVE McMORRANJuly 14, 2021 GMT WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) World Rugby will trial goal-line dropouts among five law amendments which will be implemented in global competitions from August and are designed to reduce injuries. The sport’s governing body approved the trials on the recommendation of its Law Review Group and High Performance Committee after consultation with players, coaches, competition organizers and medical officials. “Rugby’s laws are fundamental to its accessibility, appeal and safety,” World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont said. “It is our mission to ensure that the laws are the best that they can be for everyone playing the game, and this law review process has players and player welfare at heart.”

Bigger squads, more rest at extended 2023 Rugby World Cup

Teams heading to the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France will be allowed bigger squads and will benefit from greater gaps between matches, the organisers announced on Monday. In order to improve player welfare, squads will be expanded from the 31 used in 2019 to 33 while all teams will have a guaranteed five-day break between pool matches which means that tournament will run one week longer than in Japan. The 2023 edition will kick off on September 8 and conclude with the final on October 28. The announcement came after the Rugby World Cup Board, the World Rugby executive committee, the France 2023 organising committee and international players representatives agreed a ground-breaking package of player welfare principles.
