The 44th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in 1989 proclaimed 1994 as the International Year of the Family, a formal reminder of the foundational value of the family in the rapidly changing world. Subsequently, since 1993, every May 15 has been celebrated around the world as the International Day of Families.
The International Day of Families will not be celebrated this year, unfortunately, as COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on meetings and gatherings continue. In lieu of the usual celebrations, the United Nations put forward an inspiring theme for the observance of the International Day of Families this year ― Families and New Technologies.
