Today is: Anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster
Staff reports
On April 26, 1986, the worst nuclear disaster in history occurred in Chernobyl near the city of Pripyat in the north of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Large parts of Europe were contaminated when Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded. It is one of only two nuclear energy accidents rated at seven the maximum severity on the International Nuclear Event Scale.
The initial emergency response, together with later decontamination, ultimately involved more than 500,000 personnel and cost an estimated $68 billion.
Although the number of deaths attributable to the disaster is difficult to determine, experts anticipate tens of thousands of deaths across Europe in the coming decades due to cancer caused by the radioactive fallout.
