When Sarita Arteaga, UConn School of Dental Medicine associate dean for students, earned her DMD at the School in 1990, she was the only person of color out of the 38 members in her class.
Today, the School of Dental Medicine actively works to expand the diversity of both the school and the profession, including through developing a national mentoring network to support a diverse dental, oral, and craniofacial workforce.

Students in the Student National Dental Association and Hispanic Student Dental Association at the UConn School of Dental Medicine teamed up with faculty and members of the community for a virtual event in honor of Black History Month:
Participation, Access, Rights, Equity (P.A.R.E.): Reflecting with Music and the Arts.
This virtual event, released on YouTube this week, includes musical pieces, spoken word, 6-word memoir tributes and personal testimony.

The School of Dental Medicine celebrated fourth year students as they received their residency placements for next year.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the celebratory event known Match Day looked different from previous years. Despite this year’s challenges, spirits were high as each student proudly showcased their match result in front of their fellow classmates.
