Museums around the country are participating in the Blue Star Museums initiative, a program that provides free admission to currently-serving U.S. military personnel and their families this summer.
The 2021 program begins on Armed Forces Day, Saturday. It ends on Labor Day, Sept. 6. The program is a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and museums offering free admission to the nationâs active-duty military personnel and their families, including National Guard and Reserve.
More than 2,000 museums across America participate in Blue Star Museums each summer. According to the National Endowment for the Arts, the following north country museums are taking part in the program:
Historic Saranac Lakeâs Cure Porch on Wheels
(Provided photo â Historic Saranac Lake) SARANAC LAKE Historic Saranac Lake announced the launch of a new project with its Cure Porch on Wheels titled “Pandemic Past and Present.” Funding for this project came from a 2021 Corridor of Commerce Interpretive Theme Grant from the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership. Historic Saranac Lake will host programs on its mobile museum space, the Cure Porch on Wheels, to explore local history in public health with new audiences. Visitors will view short videos and participate in interactive activities that will build connections between Saranac Lake’s history as a health resort and the collective experience of the current pandemic.
North Country Public Radio Last March, the Hyde Collection, a historic house museum in Glens Falls, closed to the public when the pandemic hit, along with virtually every museum in the state. In August, the Hyde reopened with all the new features of the COVID era: plexiglass shields and markers for social distancing. But capacity, said the museum’s CEO, Norm Dascher, remained “very limited.” “We only allow two people at a time in 15 minute intervals, so we never had more than 20 people in the museum,” Dascher said, noting the museum lost not only ticket revenue over the past year but also corporate sponsorships tied to exhibitions. Organizers had to cancel its biggest yearly fundraiser, a gala, in September.

On the 12th day of Saranac Lake-mas, Historic Saranac Lake gave to you … the uniform of the Saranac Lake Pioneers Drum and Bugle Corps! This handsome fringed jacket comes with a matching pair of fringed trousers. In 1959, a letter to the editor of the Adirondack Daily Enterprise thanked the community for its support to purchase these uniforms. They would have been worn with a tan felt cap, too.
