On a key highway into India’s capital, men are doing their laundry in washing machines set up under a makeshift tent.
Just three months ago, this six-lane expressway was a busy thoroughfare for commuters and large trucks bringing supplies into New Delhi. Now, the traffic has been replaced by an almost 2-kilometer (1.2-mile) stretch of supply stores, a medical department and a library all part of a colorful, bustling hamlet of tents that’s been home to thousands of farmers for months.

A massive Kisan Mahapanchayat held here on Friday to demand rollback of the Centre’s agriculture sector laws turned out to be a show of strength for Congress leader and former deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot. The presence of Mr. Pilot at the rally not only enthused his supporters, but also lent legitimacy to the farmers’ agitation.

A sense of worry overtook protesting farmers at Delhi s Ghazipur border on Wednesday upon hearing news about the stage collapse at the Kisan Mahapanchayat in Haryana s Jind. Called by the state s Khap Panchayats, the Mahapanchayat was attended by Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) president and farmer leader Rakesh Tikait.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha will stage a rasta roko at Ram Mandir Circle here on Saturday, in response to a nation-wide call given by the morcha against anti-farmer, anti-labour policies of the Union government.
Members of various pro-farmer, pro-Dalit, pro-labour, pro-woman, student and youth organisations will participate in the rasta roko under the aegis of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha.
