In the middle of Reagan Elementary s makeshift rock garden created in the aftermath of February s winter storm a sign reads There s only one you in this great big world . make it a better place.
It s a quote for the students, certainly. It could also be, in a way, about each of the rocks stationed around it, plopped there after bushes were killed by the deep freeze and removed by staff.
Or it could be about the school itself.
There was only one Reagan Elementary (though the former Long Elementary was the building s design twin). And its time has come to an end after 62 years serving students.
Abilene ISD Redeemed After Changing Racist School Names
ABILENE, TX – The Abilene Independent School District voted to rename three elementary schools after the names of the schools were deemed racist by social justice groups.
According to KTXS, on Jan. 14, the AISD School Board voted 6-1 on three different items renaming campuses named after confederate generals.
The four schools named after the rebels were Robert E. Lee Elementary, Albert Johnston Elementary, John Reagan Elementary, and Stonewall Jackson Elementary.
All four of these men owned human beings. Now the campuses will be named after people who deserve it.
Lee will be renamed after Robert and Sammye Stafford. Staffords were education pioneers to African American families in Abilene.
