(file photo) Brian Chilson The Little Rock Board of Directors will vote tonight on whether to call a special election to ask voters to approve a permanent 1% sales tax increase. The proposed tax would raise an estimated $53 million per year, which would go toward familiar projects: parks improvements, public safety, infrastructure, street resurfacing and the Little Rock Zoo. The plan also calls for significant investment $45 million over 10 years or 8% of the tax revenue in early childhood care, a new idea for Little Rock that’s been maligned and misrepresented by several board members and members of the business community.

Staff Reports Blue Ridge Humane Society marks one year of free pet food giveaways this month. Community Outreach staff will host two giveaways this month as well as provide food and support for the Interfaith Assistance Ministry’s Drive-Thru Tuesdays on the fourth Tuesday of the month. The first pet food giveaway of the month will take place on Monday, May 10 from 3-5:30 p.m. at the BRHS Adoption Center at 88 Centipede Lane in Hendersonville. Pet owners who need pet food are invited to the following drive-thru giveaways: Monday, May 10, 3-5:30 p.m., Blue Ridge Humane Society Adoption Center, located at 88 Centipede Lane, Hendersonville.

For a limited time, those coming to the old Holland Post Office building off of 10 th Street and River Avenue in downtown Holland will receive a little package, according to Museum Education and Community Programs Manager Michelle Stempien. “We will be giving out information about tulips, the history of tulips,” she said on “WHTC Talk of the Town” during a recent appearance, “connecting it with the art in our museum, and the activity that will be going home will be supplies and instructions to make two origami tulips.”
