Hornsby Shire Council last night (Wednesday 14 July) formally adopted a draft Master Plan for its ambitious Hornsby Park project, a major new parkland to be built close to Hornsby Town Centre.
The largest single project ever undertaken by Hornsby Shire Council, the Park is being created on the site of the former Hornsby Quarry, with the first stage due to open late in 2023.
Hornsby Park will feature approximately 60 hectares of bushland and open space surrounding the site of the former quarry and include features of historical and community interest including:
early settler relics
remnant buildings of the quarry crusher plant

Community Engagement Policy endorsed
Council with strengthen and coordinate its approach to community engagement, following the endorsement of the Community Engagement Policy.
The policy will coordinate Council’s approach for all engagement activities with the community.
It outlines who Council will engage with – including why, how and when we will engage – to ensure that a coordinated and consistent approach is taken across all areas of Council, and that the community is at the heart of all decision making.
Chandler Ward Councillor, David Eastham, said that Council and the community were aware of the importance of good engagement on projects.

Council has reviewed its Community Engagement Framework that guides how, what, when, where and why we will engage with the community. The Community Engagement Framework includes a Community Engagement Policy and a Community Engagement Strategy and Action Plan. It is also supported by an internal toolkit for use by staff.
The 2021-2025 Draft Community Engagement Strategy and Action Plan has been developed in preparation for the new term of Council and Integrated Planning and Reporting activities for the 2022/23 – 2024/25 period. This strategy also considers the interim 2021-22 Operational Year, due the postponement of elections to September 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

New policy aims to give everyone a voice
A new community Engagement Policy will enhance the way residents are involved in Council’s decision-making processes when it comes to projects, plans and other activities.
Chair Administrator Ms Lydia Wilson said great community engagement can happen anywhere via a multiplicity of channels and would ultimately drive better community outcomes.
“We believe good community engagement leads to better decision-making, helping foster the long-term relationship between community and Council and ultimately quality outcomes for our City,” Ms Wilson said.
“This Community Engagement Policy is our commitment to actively involve the people who matter the most – those living, working, studying and doing business within the City of Whittlesea.
