Clackamas County agency speaks with expert in management following historic ice storm
The recent ice storm caused a lot of damage across the Willamette Valley and tested the strength of every tree species. It left many of us with a mess and asking what we should do with it.
To answer some of those questions, Nicole Ahr of the Clackamas Soil & Water Conservation District asked arborist Brian French, an expert in tree care and management who has 23 years of experience working in the county. He has been busy helping residents throughout the Willamette Valley after this storm.
Michele Veenker: Sheriff s Levy shouldn t be considered an either/or proposal
On Feb. 25, Pamplin Media Group reported on the Clackamas County commissioners voting to support the Sheriff s Levy. In that, they quoted me. Although the quote was correct, because I was not allowed to finish my testimony, my quote was taken out of context and left the readers with the misconception that I was against the levy, when in fact I support it.
The reporter said I supported the idea of increasing bed capacity for mental illness but questioned whether the sheriff s office is the best agency to administer such services.

The top-down decision to formally rescind the anarchist jurisdiction label stuck to Portland, Seattle and New York by former President Donald Trump was announced by the new boss, President Joe Biden, in an executive order promulgated on Wednesday, Feb. 24.
Local officials including Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler were pleased with the news. It s great to have a partner in the federal government instead of an opponent, said Jim Middaugh, a spokesman for the mayor. It s time to move forward with the federal government towards the recovery every Portlander wants and needs.

The project to build a new Portland Water Bureau filtration plant on Carpenter Lane in Boring is moving forward, with filtration pipeline drilling beginning today, March 1, as rural residents continue to voice opposition.
To recap: The Portland Water Bureau began planning its new filtration plant in 2017, after a mandate from the Oregon Health Authority required the bureau build a facility to treat for cryptosporidium by 2027. This mandate was to bring the bureau into compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency s Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule.

After nearly a year away from school because of the pandemic, most of La Salle Prep s 650 students started returning to their Milwaukie-area campus last month.
Public schools in North Clackamas and Gladstone remain closed through at least spring break, despite executive orders by Gov. Kate Brown. On Dec. 23, Brown ordered that teachers be vaccinated early, among other rule changes to encourage more Oregon schools, especially elementary schools, to transition to in-person instruction by Feb. 15.
Last month, more than 500 of the Catholic high school s 650 students opted to enroll in La Salle s new hybrid learning program, in which students spend half of their school days taking classes on campus and the other half taking classes remotely.
