SRINAGAR: The National Conference-led five-party People s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration on Wednesday assembled at PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti s Srinagar residence for the first time in six months to discuss the prevailing uncertainty in J&K, ostensibly triggered by rumours about the Centre planning a further bifurcation of the Union Territory.
While NC president and Srinagar MP Farooq Abdullah denied that the alliance was reacting to the possibility of a big development , the Valley was agog with talk of how the arrival of 200 companies of paramilitary forces was a signal of something brewing in Kashmir. We have not been asked or informed about anything so far regarding the ongoing speculation (that J&K might be bifurcated again), Farooq said.
SRINAGAR: Amid rumours of further bifurcation of J&K, the leaders of the five mainstream parties met on Wednesday at the official residence of PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti.
Initially, seven mainstream political parties had constituted the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) in the aftermath of the abrogation of special status of J&K and separationof Ladakh from the erstwhile state in August, 2019.
However, two main political parties - Congress and Sajad Lone’s Peoples’ Conference - quit the alliance.
The five regional parties Farooq Abdullah-led National Conference, Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP, Sajad Lone’s People’s Conference and two little-known parties called J&K People’s Movement led by Javid Mir and Awami National Conference led by Muzafar Shah along with two national parties Congress and CPM had signed the Gupkar declaration to fight for the restoration of J&K s special status.
