15 of 506 test positive for COVID-19; Guam total at 7,444 Staff Reports Pacific Daily News USA TODAY Network The Joint Information Center reported new cases of COVID-19 identified out of 506 tests performed Jan. 12. Three cases were identified through contact tracing and two reported recent travel history and were identified in quarantine, according to the Joint Information Center. The island now has a total of 7,444 officially reported cases of COVID-19. There have been 124 deaths with 112 cases in active isolation. Three are in ICU and three are on ventilators. The Guam Fire Department confirmed two firefighters assigned to the Astumbo Fire Station tested positive for COVID-19. The other personnel have been quarantined until they can be tested. Pending test results, an alternate crew has been assigned to ensure the continuity of response operations, the Joint Information Center reported.

Mayors weigh citations for abandoned vehicles The newly elected officers of the Mayors’ Council of Guam added citation training to the business agenda, touting citations as part of a greater vision to eliminate illegal dumping, in the first meeting of the year at the Sinajana Senior Center.  Jesse Alig, the president of the 26-member council, suggested mayors issue citations for illegal dumping, loose pets or public nuisances to the neighborhood. A citation works like a speeding ticket, Alig said. Once a resident receives a citation, they have the right to contest it in court. If the judge approves the citation, the fine can affect a person’s record, he continued.

Ex-Yona mayor to be sentenced next week Former Yona mayor Jesse Blas is set to be sentenced next week, with two days set aside for the court proceedings.  Blas pleaded guilty to extortion under color of official right after a woman posing as a drug dealer, who was purportedly receiving drug packages, gave him money for a mailbox that Blas controlled when he was mayor. His plea agreement states he demanded money and threatened to close the mailbox after the woman stopped paying. Prosecutors and his defense attorney spoke with District Court of Guam Chief Judge Frances Tydingco-Gatewood Monday for a status hearing before next week s sentencing.
