Bryan Terry of Murfreesboro was in favor of banning such requirements. Rep. Sabi Kumar of Springfield, meanwhile, cautioned his fellow Republicans.  “Public welfare is what we are here to do,” Kumar said during a March committee debate. “We are allowing our quest for liberty to interfere with public welfare. … I don’t think we should sacrifice anybody at the altar of our own personal liberty.”

Tennessee lawmakers avoid declaring racism public health threat

The proposed resolution was pushed to summer study. Author: Jeni Diprizio Updated: 6:18 PM CDT April 12, 2021 MEMPHIS, Tenn. Tennessee lawmakers said they need more time to study if racism should be declared a public health threat.  Last week, the head of the Centers for Disease Control made the declaration. Dozens of local and state government leaders, as well as influential organizations like the American Medical Association, have also made the declarations. But Tennessee lawmakers are choosing not to vote on the matter. The proposed resolution sponsored by Tennessee State Representative Antonio Parkinson would have declared racism a public health threat. It was sent to a summer study session. Parkinson said that move essentially kills his bill.
