Demonstrators carried rifles and wore handguns at protests at some state capitols on Sunday, gatherings that law enforcement prepared for and that remained peaceful.
Preparations have been in place around the Alabama Capitol in Montgomery since last week. Posted with the roadblocks near the Capitol are signs alerting people that Alabama law prohibits carrying firearms at demonstrations.
The law says, “It shall be unlawful for any person, other than a law enforcement officer, to have in his or her possession or on his or her person or in any vehicle any firearm while participating in or attending any demonstration being held at a public place.” It is found in Section 13A-11-59 of the Code of Alabama.
