Upper Thumb COVID: 15 cases, two deaths reported

There were two coronavirus deaths and 15 new cases reported across the Upper Thumb by the state May 13.
According to the state, Huron County saw an increase of five new cases, bringing the county to 3,017 confirmed cases and 70 deaths.
Tuscola and Sanilac County each saw an increase of five new cases and one death. There has been 4,808 confirmed cases and 157 deaths in Tuscola County and 3,680 cases and 103 deaths in Sanilac County since the start of the pandemic.
State testing data showed a statewide test positivity rate of 6.4% May 12.
Huron County saw its positivity rate drop to 2.5% its lowest rate since early March. The number was based on one positive test out of 40 processed.

Two businesses in St. Clair County and one business in Sanilac County will receive a total of $320,000 to install fast charging stations for private and commercial electric vehicles.
Local Sunrise Stores LLC, TNT Equipment and SpeedyQ Market locations are among 32 across Michigan approved for Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s Charge Up Michigan program grants, which totals over $1.8 million, according to a press release from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office.
“Michigan put the world on wheels and will continue driving the world forward by leading on mobility and electrification,” Whitmer said. “These grants demonstrate our commitment to expanding EV infrastructure across Michigan and build on the extraordinary work and investments of our innovative industry partners and EGLE to help support drivers who make the transition to electric vehicles.”

There were 22 new coronavirus cases reported across the Upper Thumb by the state May 12.
According to state data, Huron County saw an increase of eight new cases, bringing the county to 3,012 confirmed cases and 70 deaths.
Tuscola County also saw an increase of eight cases, bringing the county to 4,803 confirmed cases and 156 deaths.
Sanilac County saw an increase of six new cases and a correction that decreased the county deaths by one, bringing the county to 3,675 confirmed cases and 102 deaths.
The state’s average test positivity rate improved May 11 with 8% positivity, down from 8.5% the day prior.

The data was collected on Thursday, May 6, and includes preschools and daycares in those buildings
Last week, the state reported 197 infections in new outbreaks at 65 K-12 school buildings.
The biggest new outbreaks involves 12 students on the track team at Fulton Middle School in Gratiot County; nine students at West Middle School in Rochester Hills, and eight students and staff at St. Stephen Catholic School in New Boston, which is part of metro Detroit.
