Rodgers and Hammerstein s The King and I is opening at Emmett Hook Center this summer. First, the local theater will hold auditions to cast the actors for the Tony Award-winning musical.
The casting directors are striving for a diverse cast, and encouraging members of the Asian community to try out. The King and I is based on the novel Anna and the King Siam by Margaret Landon. In the early 1860s, Anna, a British schoolteacher, is hired to tutor King Siam s children. The governess becomes instrumental in the plan to modernize his country as she aids the headstrong king in reaching social understanding and cultural acceptance and openness.

The musical is getting a modern-day remake at Paramount, the studio confirmed on Saturday
, more than 60 years after the original first hit cinemas.
The 1956 Rodgers
and Hammerstein Tony Award winner tells the story of Anna Leonowens, who became the private tutor to the children of King Mongkut of Siam – now Thailand – in the early 1860s.
The film was itself an adaptation of the stage musical, which debuted in 1951, based on the 1944 novel
Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon.
The semi-fictionalised novel was, in turn, inspired by the memoirs of Leonowens, who wrote two books based on her five years living at court:

The bar has been set high for both the stage and screen versions of the acclaimed musical The King And I.
And on Friday Paramount Pictures announced it has bought the rights to the Rodgers & Hammerstein s classic, and that a new film version is now in development.
The late Yul Brynner famously played King Mongkut Of Siam in the 1950s on Broadway, for which he won two Tony Awards, and in the film adaption: a performance that earned him and Academy Award For Best Actor.
