Rodgers and Hammerstein's "The King and I" is opening at Emmett Hook Center this summer. First, the local theater will hold auditions to cast the actors for the Tony Award-winning musical.
The casting directors are striving for a diverse cast, and encouraging members of the Asian community to try out.
"The King and I" is based on the novel "Anna and the King Siam" by Margaret Landon. In the early 1860s, Anna, a British schoolteacher, is hired to tutor King Siam's children. The governess becomes instrumental in the plan to modernize his country as she aids the headstrong king in reaching social understanding and cultural acceptance and openness.
