Not too long ago in the North Bronx, steps away from the final stop on the 1 train, I enjoyed one of the more technically astute and delicious meals I’ve had in recent memory. In a quiet section of Van Cortlandt Park, I found a nice bench and sampled a few empanadas from Claudy’s Kitchen, a Peruvian spot that opened last summer during the pandemic. To start, I devoured a powerfully porky chicharon empanada that felt as weightless as a Zalto wine stem. Then I moved onto a chorizo variety that carefully deployed its potatoes to keep the smokiness of the dried Spanish sausage in check. Finally, I tried an airy cinnamon apple variety that made me wish McDonald’s served a version like this across the country.

The de Blasio administration is at risk of squandering its impressive open streets initiative just as it is supposed to be made permanent failing to fill the vacuum created as community groups are struggling with material costs, volunteers are drifting away and car owners are moving to reclaim the few metaphorical inches of space that the city repurposed for healthy recreation during the COVID pandemic. The mayor last year said his open streets program a haphazard collection of roughly 70 miles of street segments across all five boroughs would be a permanent addition to the streetscape. But the mayor has never defined what shape that permanent open space would take and how it will be fostered so that it doesn’t merely rely on thousands of volunteers setting up and removing barricades every day, replacing them when they are vandalized or damaged by car drivers, and dealing with hostilities from motorists who don’t understand the program.

Robert Sietsema/Eater Queens red sauce joint Il Triangolo is reopening Beloved Queens Italian restaurant Il Triangolo is set to reopen after initially closing down permanently last October. The red sauce joint will reopen March 4 with a new owner at the helm but the same staff and menu, Eater has learned. Edwin Nunez, who oversaw the design and marketing for the restaurant, purchased the establishment from its longtime owner Mario Gigliotti last month, a restaurant representative tells Eater. The restaurant reopened for deliveries on February 26, and will welcome diners back inside starting this Thursday. The restaurant does not have any outdoor seating.
