The Sudbury-based Junction Creek Stewardship Committee is launching a four-week program for teens this summer, which includes nature hikes, tree planting, art projects, and conversations with experts on different areas of environmental protection.

A university is not buildings; it is the sum of all the activities that go on in and around the campus; and much further. It is ultimately the interaction of learners and those who offer learning opportunities. It is the research and even the conversations between and amongst seemingly disparate parts that lead to surprises, discoveries, solutions, and understandings.
The removal of professors, staff, and the impact of cuts and closing, are beyond evaluation and reach well outside our geographic region. In ecology and environmental sciences, the closing of programs ends decades of awareness, sharing, and success in land, soil, and water research and restoration.
For Beeds, the land and water provide comfort when she is struggling and wanting to connect with her ancestors.
So seeing garbage littered along the shoreline or throughout a waterway is unsettling for her. She provides a comparison to someone dumping garbage in a church, synagogue or mosque. That s my place of worship, that s where I go to pray. And when I go to pray and I see all of this garbage in this beautiful, beautiful landscape.I was literally brought to tears, she said.

It was a short time later after seeing the garbage dam in the creek that Beeds was visiting the Winter Market. That s when she saw a booth from the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee, which promotes activities of restoration and research for the creek.

Junction Creek has been the butt of many a Sudbury joke, but during a recent paddle on a warm Saturday afternoon, I was stunned by just how beautiful the waterway is at its western reaches.
Launching from Mud Lake amid a carpet of underwater weeds (resembling milfoil) the size of a football field, I set out for a little adventure on a most urban waterway. While the homes of Lively punctuated the left bank, the right was largely forested and a reminder of how close to nature we live in Greater Sudbury.
