GUWAHATI: Hagrama Mohilary-led Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), which saved the BJP-led government in Assam in 2019 after AGP snapped ties with the saffron coalition over differences on Citizenship Amendment Act, has vowed to play the kingmaker in state politics once again. Former chief minister Tarun Gogoi-led Congress returned to power in Assam in 2006 with the help of BPF. With 56 MLAs, Congress fell short of the majority mark in the 126-member assembly that year, where BPF with 11 MLAs helped in the formation of a Congress-led coalition government. In the present Assam government, Congress has 19 MLAs, while AIUDF and BPF have 14 and 11 legislators, respectively.

Average assets of re-elected Assam MLAs increased by 95%

Assam Tourism Minister Chandan Brahma registered the highest growth rate of assets while Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta also figure among the top five re-elected MLAs whose assets increased significantly, according to a report. Mr. Brahma, who belongs to Bodoland People s Front (BFP) heads the list of the highest growth of assets and is followed by AIUDF s Abdur Rahim Ajmal, Nazrul Islam of Congress, BJP s Sarma and AGP s Mahanta, according to an analysis of assets of 34 re-elected MLAs in the 2016 assembly elections by the Assam Election Watch.

Self-sworn affidavits of 34 re-elected legislators, many of whom are set to contest the state election again this year, revealed an average rise in Rs 1.48 crore. The Assam Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) published the study. Minister in the Sarbananda Sonowal cabinet, Chandan Brahma of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), recorded the maximum increase in assets, which was an increase of Rs 6.97 crore. The legislator from ST reserved Sidli constituency had assets worth Rs 2.60 crore in 2011, which went up to Rs 9.58 crore in 2016, a whopping 268% rise.
