Additional police were deployed in the area to avoid further clashes, he added.
Citing locals, the police official said, Momin Munshi, another sibling of chairman Hanif, locked into an altercation with a local UP member Saddam Miah near Charchartala Eidgah ground around 11:30pm on Friday.
On information, Hanif rushed to the spot and settled the issue.
However, in the aftermath of the incident, Saddam s supporters stormed Hanif s house around 1:00am yesterday with local weapons like harpoon.
At one point, Jamal and a few other people of their group tried to obstruct their opponents but were seriously injured.
Jamal died on the way to hospital, the OC said.
