AUGUSTA The Legislature’s Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs passed a bill from Senator Chloe Maxmin, D-Nobleboro, to improve Maine’s laws regarding spending by political action committees.
LD 1621, “An Act To Reform Payments to Legislators by Political Action Committees,” received a vote of 12-0.
“Maine people have no patience for shady politics. The unfortunate truth is that for too long, our laws have left open loopholes for political action committees and candidates to profit off. This bill would make common-sense changes to close those loopholes,” said Sen. Maxmin. “I’m grateful to the committee for their work on this bill, and for their support of smart campaign finance reforms.”

AUGUSTA Senator Chloe Maxmin, D-Nobleboro, introduced a bill this week to improve Maine’s laws regarding spending by political action committees.
LD 1621, “An Act To Reform Payments to Legislators by Political Action Committees,” was the subject of a public hearing before the Legislature’s Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs.
“This bill joins other pieces of legislation this session to ensure that money, campaigns and politics have the cleanest relationship possible. I know that we all hear from our constituents about the need to get big money out of politics. We deserve free and fair elections. We also deserve to know that our elected legislators are not unfairly profiting or benefiting from doing the people’s work,” said Sen. Maxmin. “These are common-sense reforms that Maine voters deserve.”
AUGUSTA Senator David Miramant, D-Camden, introduced a bill this week to allow wineries to ship their products in and out of Maine.
LD 1093, “An Act To Expand the Options for Shipping Wine Directly to Customers, was the subject of a public hearing before the Legislature’s Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs.
“As it stands now, out-of-state wineries and wine clubs have greater freedom to deliver wine in Maine than our own local wineries,” said Miramant. “Changing this law will help us support and promote Maine businesses.”
LD 1093 would allow retail stores, both in and out of Maine, ship wine directly to customers.
AUGUSTA Sen. David Miramant, D-Camden, presented Wednesday a bill to expand the use of Ranked Choice Voting in Maine elections.
LD 202, “Resolution, Proposing an Amendment to the Constitution of Maine To Implement Ranked-choice Voting,” was the subject of a public hearing before the Legislature’s Committee on Veterans and Legal Affairs (VLA).
“Here in Maine, we’ve been using ranked-choice voting in many of our elections since 2018,” said Sen. Miramant. “The people of Maine have voted twice in the last five years to show their support for ranked-choice voting in our elections, including for the offices of governor and state legislature. We’ve had a long public education process, and we know that not only does this system work, but it works better than expected.”
