Plea in SC seeks probe into tractor rally violence on Jan 26 ANI | Updated: Jan 31, 2021 02:30 IST
New Delhi [India], January 31 (ANI): A petition has been filed on Saturday by two lawyers, before the Supreme Court seeking an independent probe by Special Investigation Team (SIT) or judicial enquiry commission headed by a retired SC judge in connection with the alleged violence, damage of public property and breach of peaceful protest in the farmer s tractor rally held on January 26.
The petition was filed by two advocates Vishal Thakre and Abhay Singh Yadav through their lawyer Pradeep Kumar Yadav and Advocate on Record (AOR) Sanjeev Malhotra before the Supreme Court.
Bench, however, does not stay implementation of legislation passed by States.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday agreed to examine the constitutional validity of a spate of laws enacted by States such as Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand that criminalise religious conversion via marriage and mandate prior official clearance before marrying into another faith.
A Bench led by Chief Justice of India Sharad A. Bobde, however, did not stay the implementation of Prohibition Of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020 and the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion Act, 2018, despite fervent pleas by petitioners that “rampaging mobs are lifting off people in the middle of wedding ceremonies,” buoyed by the enactment of the laws.
