If the struggling Cape Henlopen boys’ basketball team wanted to start putting games in the win column, the Vikings couldn’t continue to live and die with the scoring of Ja’Vaughn Burton. Through Cape’s first nine games of the season, the senior wing averaged 23.4 points and accounted for nearly 40 percent of his team’s offensive output. Hosting a dangerous Sussex Central squad Feb. 19, the Vikings knew that others would have to step up and provide balance.

The Cape girls’ basketball team ran its record to 11-0 Feb. 16, with a 65-21 win over visiting Smyrna.
Cape played its Crazy 8 uptempo offense in the second and third periods, outscoring the Eagles 45-7.
Cape was led in scoring by Morgan Mahoney with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Ella Rishko contributed 11 points.
The Vikings have games left against Sussex Central, Dover and Milford, teams they beat earlier in the season by a combined score of 186-44.

Chris Mattioni to include her in Senior Night ceremonies because she is graduating early. The sports moments are fleeting by choice for Laci, who guarded the lax cage two seasons for the Mariner boys’ team before starting her freshman season for the Cape girls, leading them to a perfect 18-0 season and their 11th straight state championship. “It’s time for me to move on to college,” Laci said behind her trademark smile. “I’ll be going to Del Tech, and I’m going to be a dental hygienist.” And that is the great thing about covering high school kids – they stick and jab while circling the ring and sometimes before the round is over, they ring their own bell, climb thr
