Delaney Brooks
Delaney Brooks is a sophomore at Appoquinimink High School. She has Lewes and Cape family connections, as her mom is Kristen Shipe Brooks and her Pop Pop is Robert Shipe of Top of the Line Cleaning. Delaney finished third in the 100 meters in 12.9, fifth in the 200 in 27.27, and second in the 4-by-100 relay in 53.78, where she ran anchor at the Caravel Invitational. This is her first spring running track after having last spring cut short due to COVID. She was a seven-year travel softball player waiting for high school to run track (there are no middle school sports in Appoquinimink school district). She has trained with Taj Washington at Alpha Training for the past four years and just started with track coach Mark Dendy this spring. She’s a sprinter by nature, but has just started playing around with the long jump as well. Her cousin, Joey Shipe, is currently a junior at Cape. Her dad, Dave Brooks, was a multi-sport athlete at Elkton High School, w

Middle School Students Compete in Virtual Event
A Middletown home school student earned the title of 2021 Junior Solar Sprint champion in a virtual competition held Friday.
Each year, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control teams up with the Delaware Technology Student Association for the event. Middle school students work with classmates and teacher advisors over several months to build model cars powered by solar photovoltaic cells, better known as solar panels.
“As we continue to move toward cleaner, renewable energy sources, the competition provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate how we can meet our future energy needs,” said DNREC Secretary Shawn M. Garvin. “Seeing how your design stacks up against others from around the state is a fun and educational experience that students can learn and grow from.”

Frederick tosses perfect game for the Vikings

Cape senior pitcher Marissa Frederick had the right stuff April 12, as she delivered a perfect 16-strikeout, no-hit performance at previously undefeated Sussex Academy. The Vikings won 16-0 to move to 4-2 on the season, while the Seahawks dropped to 3-1.
“My curve and rise balls were really working today,” Frederick said. “But it’s just about what you see when they get into the box on how you’re going to approach them and what you’re going to do to get them out. It’s great to know I have such a great team behind me, because there is always that possibility that you’re going to throw that slip-up pitch. You have to keep the thoughts of the no-hitter out of your head. You don’t speak about it, let alone think about it. You just do your best on that
