Teddy is not a film worthy of love, but it’s not a film worthy of ridicule either. Each time, when you feel like you have enough ammunition to shoot this film down, Teddy surprises you with a gentle touch here and there, showing evidence of the moderate thought that seems to have gone into its writing. For instance, the idea of the protagonist, Shiva (Arya), having eidetic memory, is reasonably well-utilised in the narrative. There is also genuine attempt at capturing, even if fleetingly so, the nature of such a man’s life. How would Shiva make money? How would his relationships be? There’s a constant attempt in this film to root Shiva’s actions in reality.
Songs in several inappropriate places act as speed bumps in the breezy, mindless and fun Teddy. Anyhow, for many of us who are still young at heart, the movie s adult-toy bonding alone may be enough to look past those kinds of issues. Mar 13, 2021 By Sreejith Mullappilly
In Shakti Soundar Rajan s children s film Teddy, Arya s character Shiva is your quintessential Mr Know-All. Shiva s photographic memory allows him to learn martial arts, different languages, scientific things, spiritual stuff, stock exchange shares, and pretty much everything else under the sun. Shiva s special ability results in him realizing why the big teddy bear that appears overnight in his bedroom is talking and behaving like a human being. All it takes is a mere Google search and some reading for him to learn what happened to the Teddy Bear.

Director Shakti Soundar Rajan is someone who always tries his hand at themes that haven t been attempted in Tamil cinema before. His latest film Teddy features an adorable talking teddy bear as the protagonist that befriends a man, who is a loner. Though the idea is very similar to the popular Hollywood flick, Ted, released in 2012, this film is way too serious and throws light on medical crimes that are happening around the world. The film has enough meat in the writing to keep you invested in the lives of its characters. However, it fails to stay true to the genre as the film progresses.
