Thursday s Afternoon Update

Thursday s Afternoon Update | 4/22/2021 To beat coronavirus, herd immunity is the goal. Can Florida get there? The rollout of coronavirus vaccines in Florida was heralded as a light at the end of the tunnel for a pandemic that has upended normalcy and killed 35,000 people in the Sunshine State alone. Now comes the question of just how long the tunnel is.  “We have a lot of vaccines out there all over the place, but people aren’t getting it,” said Kevin Watler, a spokesman for the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County. “How fast we can resume to normal really lies with people who are choosing not to get vaccinated.” More from the Tampa Bay Times.

Chiles Group moves L-shaped historic cottage | Longboat Key

The two historic cottages that sat at 521 Broadway St. are in their new locations, but one of them still requires approval from the town to remain. Crews moved the larger L-shaped cottage early in the morning on Jan. 21 to temporarily sit on cribs at 6920 Gulf of Mexico Drive just north of Whitney Beach Plaza. Unlike the Longboat Key Historical Society’s move earlier this month of its cottage to the Town Center site, crews did not need to use Gulf of Mexico Drive for the move of the larger cottage. Instead, crews used Palm Drive. The larger cottage will sit on cribs near its final location via a temporary-use permit approval, according to Planning, Zoning and Building  Director Allen Parsons.

Longboat Key historic cottages planning to move in 2021 | Longboat Key

The town knows where two historical cottages are bound, but the specific timing and authorizations on when they’ll get moved is still a work in progress. Planning, Zoning and Building Director Allen Parsons updated Planning and Zoning Board members recently about plans to relocate the cottages in 2021. “The smaller of the two [cottages] is going into the Town Center,” Parsons said. “That won’t come before this board immediately. There likely will be an update to the planned unit development for the Town Center property, but that’s not coming in the immediate future.” Parsons estimated the P&Z Board would receive a site development plan amendment for its consideration by February to move the larger L-shaped cottage to 6920 Gulf of Mexico Drive just north of Whitney Plaza. The Chiles Group, which owns Mar Vista Dockside Restaurant, purchased the larger cottage.
