MADRAS, Ore. (KTVZ) Jefferson County Education Service District and the High Desert Education Service District announced this week that Shay Mikalson will serve as JCESD’s superintendent while also continuing in his current role as chief student success officer with High Desert Education Service District.
Mikalson brings 20 years of educational leadership experience to JCESD and served as superintendent for Bend-La Pine Schools for 5 years prior to joining HDESD in July 2020.
For nearly 50 years, the part-time JCESD superintendent position has been the shared responsibility of the Jefferson County School District 509-J superintendent. This year, the school board decided to split the position when JCSD 509-J announced that Superintendent Ken Parshall will be retiring in June and Jay Mathisen, currently the director of educational leadership at George Fox University, will take his place.

“Astyn was always a nice kid, but I couldn’t get him to respond,” said Neil Fendall, dean of students at Sisters High School.
Astyn moved to Sisters in the fourth grade with his brother, mom, and stepdad. By the time he was 14 years old, Astyn was living in a trailer with his 16-year-old brother, on a property outside of Sisters owned by his brother’s girlfriend’s family.

photo provided Sisters School District will have two new building principals for the 2021-22 year, now that Sisters Middle School Principal Alison Haney announced her resignation after three years in the position.
Her departure follows in the heels of the announcement of Sisters High School Principal Joe Hosang taking on a new role at the district office.
Haney is expecting her first child in early June and has decided to put her focus on her family.
“Stemming from my knowledge of early childhood education and my love for children, my only plan for the immediate future is to enjoy the first year of being a mom,” she said. “In today’s day and age, it is a rarity to be afforded the opportunity of being truly and fully present with something or someone, and I feel incredibly fortunate to do so with o
An active and creative community with plenty of charm to be found For those looking for a quieter life than Bend affords, Sisters small-town charm combined with its cultural wealth make it an amazing place to live. Home to the Sisters Folk Fest and the Sisters Quilt Show, the town attracts creatives, retirees, cowpokes and those looking to escape city life for something far more serene. An itinerary for a typical Saturday shows just how attractive the town can be. A dreamy day in Sisters starts with a stop at Angelina s Bakery and Cafe on Main Avenue. There you will find innumerable tasty morsels, many gluten free, vegan and sweetened with agave. Soups, salads, curry and more served for lunch, plus, exquisite coffee or tea. My personal favorite order is the jam-jam and a non-dairy chai. What s a jam-jam you ask? Lemon poppy seed crumbly scone molded with a slightly concave glazed base and a pool of raspberry tart in the middle. So good.
